Valentine’s Day Aphrodisiac: ginger cherry custard

The pairing of spicy ginger and sweet creamy custard is a marriage made in heaven. Top that with some rum and honey-poached dried cherries and the honeymoon may last indefinitely. Below is this surprisingly simple recipe for Ginger Custard with Poached Cherries.

SIMPLE SOLUTION: For centuries both ginger and cherries have been used as aphrodisiacs. Whether their efficacy in that mission is fact or fiction has yet to be proven conclusively by science, but it is known that ginger and cherries are loaded with health-giving properties. Ginger has been shown to improve circulation, among other things, while cherries are filled with antioxidants, melatonin, and important vitamins and minerals. This recipe is really quite simple, but does require time for chilling, so plan accordingly.

Poached Dried Cherries
1 cup dried cherries
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon rum

Candied ginger for garnish (optional)

1. Cover the cherries with 2 cups of hot water and let soak for 15 minutes. Drain and reserve ¾ cup of the soaking water.

2. Combine the reserved soaking water, honey, rum and cherries in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

3. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the liquid is thickened and the cherries are tender. Allow to cool.

Ginger Custard
1/2 cup Sucanat (or the natural sweetener of your choice)
1/4 cup fresh ginger, finely chopped
1/4 cup water
1¾ cups whole organic milk
2 whole eggs
2 egg yolks
Pinch of salt

1. Preheat oven to 325°F with rack in middle level.

2. Boil Sucanat, ginger and water in a heavy saucepan, and stir until Sucanat is dissolved. Add milk, return just to a boil and remove from heat. Cover and let stand for 15 minutes.

3. Stir whole eggs, yolks, and salt in a bowl. Gently whisk in hot mixture and then strain to remove solids. Divide mix into six custard bowls, ramekins, or pretty teacups, and cover each one securely with foil.

4. Place custards in a large rectangular baking dish and place in oven. Fill the baking dish with hot water to reach halfway up the custard bowls.

5. Bake in the water bath for about 40 minutes, or until edges are firm but center still wobbles.

6. Remove carefully and place custards on a rack, and remove foil to cool to room temperature, about 40 minutes. Place custards in refrigerator and chill for 2 hours. Top with poached cherries and a scattering of chopped candied ginger.

Serves 6.

What Is Spiritual Health? ayahuasca consciousness

In today’s culture, the concept of Spirit has been scientifically removed from our belief system. Only through the study of other, much older cultures have we been reminded of what our ancestors knew to be the “truth”. Religion, cultural dis association from the natural world and modernization of societies has changed that belief system of “truth” to ritual of words with no meaning. What our ancestors and these ancient cultures knew is that Spirit is real. This Spirit within each of us is capable of much more than we could ever imagine, and by encountering it through the use of Ayahuasca we are learning about our deeper selves. We can begin to expand the boundaries of our true potential, to gain the power to heal ourselves. An intimate connection is made with the Divine through this healing modality.

Many physical and emotional sicknesses are the result of a disharmony within ourselves. Something is wounded in within our soul, and it has manifested into a condition that shows up emotionally or as a physical ailement. By treating the body, the affliction can only be maintained, but not cured, like cutting a weed that grows back a short time later.

Consciously working with the Spirit, however, can allow an individual to discover the root of an illness and to pull up these roots and alleviate their own suffering. Spirit can manifest illness and it can manifest pure joy. The power lies in the belief of our intentions and our willingness to surrender to what we can never know, but can feel within our own beings.

Polyphenols: gobble up free radicals

Green Tea is goood for me!Tea leaves at the bottom of your cup really do reveal clues about your future.

See green leaves in your mug a couple of times a day? All signs point to long-term benefits for your ticker. Research shows that just two 8-ounce servings a day of polyphenol-rich green tea can dramatically reduce the risk of dying from heart disease and can cut the risk of stroke in women as well. Wondering what the future holds? Put your money on green tea, not fortune-tellers.

The polyphenols in green tea gobble up free radicals and improve artery function, both of which help keep diseases at bay. Drinking 16 ounces a day (about 500 milliliters) cut the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease by 26 percent in a recent study. And the more green tea people drank, the more protection they got. Although both men and women were shielded, the benefits were more pronounced in women.

Two cups a day isn’t a lot, but even if you don’t average that much green tea daily, don’t give it up. Drinking at least half a cup (4 ounces) a day was linked to some reduction in mortality risk. So grab a teacup, point that pinkie, and drink to a healthy future.
